The area around Copper Mountain was first inhabited by the Ute and Arapaho Native Americans who called this lush, high mountain forest home. It was later discovered by miners who named it after the metal most common to the area. They were followed by loggers, and fur traders. Later, in 1971 it was founded as a ski resort. Since then it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination.
